Scrum Training
The Scrum Alliance is a nonprofit organization committed to delivering articles, resources, courses, andevents that will help Scrum users be successful. The Scrum Alliance (sm)’s mission is to promote increased awareness and understanding of Scrum, provide resources to individuals and organizations using Scrum, and support the iterative improvement of the software development profession.

The Scrum Alliance(SM) has recently transformed the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification into a more rigourous certificate program with updated content, increased difficulty and a pass/fail outcome. Previously all candidates were initially granted Scrum certification regardless of score, but this will no longer be the case starting April 1, 2012. After successfully completing the Certified ScrumMaster Workshop, participants will have all information required to take the new evaluation and become Scrum certified. The evaluation is completed online at the end of training, and consists of 35 questions. They will also be registered with the Scrum Alliance, with online access to class training materials and any updates for two years.

This course is backed by the Exam Pass Guarantee. Upon completion of our Scrum Master Certification Course, if after two attempts within the 60-day evaluation period you have not passed the exam and obtained certification, we will allow you to attend another session of our Scrum Master Certification Course free of charge and pay for you to retake your certification exam.

Even projects that have solid, well-defined project plans encounter some degree of change and waste. Shifting market conditions, budget cuts, staff restructuring, or any number of influences will disrupt the best plan while contributing to customer dissatisfaction and staff discouragement. Moreover, projects that begin with changing or unclear requirements make it difficult to even establish project expectations. Scrum is the agile development process that allows teams to deliver usable software periodically throughout the life of the project, absorbing change and new requirements as the project proceeds.

Beginning with the history of agile development and moving through the disciplines promoted by Scrum, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Scrum methodology while specifically reviewing the behaviors expected of a ScrumMaster. This 2-day Scrum certification training class is suitable for those practicing or looking to practice the art of the ScrumMaster, but is highly valuable for anyone involved in Scrum (Managers, Team Members, Product Managers, etc.).

This Scrum certification training course is a stimulating combination of class interaction, case studies, group exercises and workshops. Each is designed to allow you to easily grasp new concepts and techniques. Specifically, you will cover:

  • The "Art of the Possible": learn how small change can have a large impact on productivity
  • Product integrity: review various options employees use when faced with difficulty, learn the importance of delivering high quality products in Scrum

Course Outline:

Short, five-minute exercises and case studies will be scattered throughout the two-day session. Longer exercises are detailed below. Time spent on each topic will vary depending on the composition of the class and the interest in particular areas.

1. Agile Thinking
In order for us to understand the benefits of Scrum and the nuances behind its framework, we begin with the history of agile methods and how relatively new thoughts in software development have brought us to Scrum.

Here we’ll ensure that we’re all working from the same foundational concepts that make up the Scrum Framework.

3. Implementation Considerations
Moving beyond Scrum’s foundational concepts, we’ll use this time to dig deeper into the reasons for pursuing Scrum. We’ll also use this time to begin a discussion of integrity in the marketplace and how this relates to software quality.

EXERCISE: Integrity at a fast-food restaurant. During this exercise we’ll review various options regarding an employee faced with a difficult situation. The importance of providing high quality products to our customers will be explored.

EXERCISE: understanding customer expectations. This exercise is the beginning of an extended exercise involving agile estimating and planning. During this first portion of the exercise, we’ll work with a fictional customer who has a very demanding schedule and understand how our assessment of project work plays a significant role in customer satisfaction.

EXERCISE: : The 59-minute Scrum Simulation. This popular exposure to Scrum asks us to work on a short project that lasts for just 59 minutes! We’ll walk through all of the key steps under the Scrum framework as we work in project teams to deliver a new product.

 4. Scrum Roles
Who are the different players in the Scrum game? We’ll review checklists of role expectations in preparation for further detail later in our session.

Instructors

Peter Borsella is the founder of Winnow Management Corporation, based in Parkland, Florida. Peter is an IT professional with 24 years of experience in application development and IT leadership. He is also a Project Management Professional (certified by the PMI) and certified by the Scrum Alliance (sm) to provide Certified Scrum Trainer instructional services.His ability to contribute across a wide range of environments has taken him to companies such as First Data Corporation and eFunds Corporation, and outside the United States to India and Hungary. Peter is adept in administering all aspects of project management, as well as providing authentic leadership to create effective teams. An active and contributing member to both the PMI and the Scrum Alliance (sm), Peter's speaking engagements focus on bridging the gap between traditional Project Management and Agile Project Management. His goal is to help others understand how to get the best return from any project by achieving higher levels of software quality, increased customer satisfaction, and cohesive teams that enjoy increased productivity.

Mishkin Berteig has been training, coaching and consulting for organizations adopting Agile methods since 2001. Mishkin was co-founder of Berteig Consulting in 2004. Mishkin is committed to helping individuals, teams and organizations apply Agile methods. Mishkin has assisted organizations of all sizes to make the transformation from traditional methods to Agile/Scrum methods (Extreme Programming, Scrum, Lean, OpenAgile). Chet Hendrickson is the co-author of Extreme Programming Installed, a revolutionary software development book. He has over 11 years of training experience and over 25 years of working experience. He is also a Certified Scrum Trainer. Many of the courses that Chet teaches are programs that he helped write and develop. Chet was the first signatory of the Agile Manifesto and a co-curator of AgileAtlas.org. He has experience working for ThoughtWorks, DiamlerChrysler and EDS. At these companies Chet served as Senior Architect, Senior Software Systems Specialist and Systems Engineer. Chet understands how insufficient communication, poor testing, and overly complex program designs can hurt development effort. Therefore, he encourages simplicity, communication, feedback, and courage in improving the software development process. At ASPE, Chet teaches Agile Developer Skills, Certified ScrumMaster, Certified Scrum Product Owner, and Test-Driven Development.

Chris Doss is an Agile coach, trainer, consultant, and Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). Chris has over sixteen years as a project manager and is a Project Management Professional (PMP). Chris has coached or supported over one hundred different Agile teams and led the implementation of Agile for large organizations with extensive organizational change management experience. Having served in management for an Agile organization, Chris understands the support system and infrastructure that needs to exist in order for Agile to thrive within a company. Chris is a Six Sigma Green Belt and applies Lean principles to software development, business process and product development. In addition to his experience as a manager, coach and trainer, Chris has strong leadership skills honed over 18+ years as an officer in the Army National Guard; he has applied these skills to build high-performing teams. Chris received his master's degree in Business Administration from Lynchburg College and his bachelor's degree from the Virginia Military Institute.

James Smith's 30 year IT career began at IBM in mainframe sales and at AT&T in product development. James's central focus is now on Scrum. First seeing the power of Scrum during a most dramatic of corporate turnarounds prompted his move to the role of ScrumMaster. Every one of the 26 Teams with whom he worked, taught him that Scrum was the most efficient and profitable way of developing software. As a member of Winnow Management, James is pleased with the opportunity to share all of his learnings assisting in the launch of new Agile Teams. He feels that Scrum, when properly implemented, makes life better for all involved. And at the end of the day, that is a very good thing of which to be a part. James is certified by the Scrum Alliance to teachCertified ScrumMaster training, and holds an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.

Bob Schatz specializes in training, consulting and coaching in the practice of successfully using agile project management techniques to transform their organizations and improve the performance of their software development projects. He began his practice as a result of leading the first large agile transition at Primavera and helping many other companies do the same. Bob has experience at every level of the organization. He was the VP and Chief Development Officer for Solstice Software, leading the software development of the Solstice enterprise integration testing products. Bob Schatz also served as VP of Development for Primavera Systems, Inc. where he was responsible for leading the team that develops Primavera's software solutions for Enterprise Project and Portfolio Management and created a real agile success story. Bob is a leader in successfully implementing agile development techniques, such as Scrum and XP, and driving culture changes in organizations. He holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Temple University and a Masters degree in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Kiran Thakkar is an IT professional with 22 years of experience in global application development and leadership. is a Project Management Professional (certified by the PMI) and a Certified Scrum Trainer (certified by the Scrum Alliance). Kiran also holds an MBA and an MS in Computer Science. Kiran worked at Siemens Medical Solutions and played an instrumental role in one of the largest agile/scrum implementation in the world. Kiran was an overall program release manager at Siemens for a very large-scale, globally distributed, and FDA compliant agile initiative (40+ teams, over 500 members). Kiran laid the groundwork for agile practices still in use and highly effective in Siemens today. Kiran brings real life scrum implementation experience to his class. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Penn State Great Valley.

Lonnie Weaver-Johnson obtained a degree in Speech Communications and then went on to a 20 year business career. Most of that time she has spent time implementing IT projects or managing people using a servant leadership style. Lonnie enjoys transforming people through conflict resolution, performance management, or simply imparting knowledge. Lonnie began working with Scrum in 2006 and her Scrum training has taken her across the country and to India and Canada where she has shared her knowledge of Scrum. Weaver-Johnson has spent much of her career leading teams and individuals through Agile transformations. She has been a speaker at local events such as the Agile Experience Group and the Project Management Institute Minnesota Chapter Agile Local Interest Group and at global events such as the Scrum Alliance Scrum Gatherings in Chicago and Seattle. Weaver-Johnson has also been a trainer in her local community and has served as vice president of an area Toastmasters club. Weaver-Johnson's ability to develop others will allow her to grow our agile practice and help our customer's meet their goals. Helping teams learn and grow together until they reach a high performing stage is Lonnie's passion. Her candid and patient coaching style helps people understand how to make the necessary behavioral changes to make Scrum work on their teams. Lonnie has been an IT leader, a BA, a corporate trainer, a Toastmaster officer, a public speaker in her community, and a volunteer at local high schools training kids on team development. In each of these cases Lonnie brings high energy to her classes, motivates the learners, and uses humor and stories to keep people engaged.
